A British defense technology company, Qinetiq, is testing a new type of lithium-ion battery for hybrids and electric vehicles that could be substantially cheaper and more powerful than existing batteries.

The battery is based on lithium-ion iron-sulfide chemistry, which has a number of advantages over the chemistry of existing batteries, says Gary Mepsted, technical manager for Qinetiq’s power sources group. The new battery would cost half as much as existing vehicle batteries and could last longer and recharge more quickly that other lithium batteries. Mepsted says that compared to standard lithium-ion batteries, the new battery has demonstrated about 1.6 times the energy density (which would extend a plug-in electric’s range) and a 50 percent higher power density (which would let hybrids charge and discharge more rapidly).

Researchers have long viewed lithium-ion batteries as an attractive alternative to the expensive metal-based batteries now used in hybrids. But although standard lithium-ion batteries are relatively cheap and can store about twice as much energy as standard nickel metal hydride cells, developers have had to overcome a number of technological challenges to make them practical for vehicles.

Plug-in electric vehicles need batteries with higher energy densities to extend their range between charges, says Mepsted. And for hybrids, the power density of standard lithium-ion batteries is less than ideal for coping with the rapid charging and discharging that comes with the regenerative braking systems used in hybrids.

Another issue is safety, says Jeff Dahn, a professor of physics and chemistry at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. We have all stood frustrated and angry, waiting for the batteries to finish recharging. It is almost enough to just throw your hands up and storm to the nearest discount mart and buy a handful of the cheap single use alkaline batteries and be done with it. There is good news; a lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery has been developed that charges “up to 80% of capacity in about one minute” (palminfocenter.com) although there are some detractors from that statement. That information was released in 2005 and while progress has been made in the speed at which you can charge the Li-ion cells, it is still not as fast or as efficient as some would prefer. It should also be noted that many experts do not recommend rapid charging the Li-ion battery, at least not until the right charging technology is finally discovered.

Consider the chemical process that must occur within the battery for charging to even occur; while it is true that you can pump electrical energy into the cells in a rapid manner, it will probably be put into place faster than the chemicals can react to it which can damage to the battery, or its plates. A slower charge allows for the proper chemical reactions to occur and extends the life of the battery itself. Unfortunately, battery life expectancy for those who are using the Li-ion batteries is about three years maximum regardless of charging, usage, or storage techniques.

The Li-ion battery could end up with a new (and presumably non-damaging) rapid charger as soon as the science is perfected. Current experimentation with lithium titanate coatings allow the lithium-ion crystals to move better and more freely, allowing for a faster charge in theory (Abuelsamid 2009). However there are still some drawbacks and problem areas to manage before this becomes reality.

For now, it is wisest to adhere to the charger’s instructions for charging all types of batteries for both safety and product longevity. Li-ion batteries should be charged frequently and not taken down to zero. They can be charged up to 4.10 V which is 10% below top capacity but allows for longer service life. Li-ion batteries do not need primed before first use like the nickel batteries do. [Nickel based rechargeable batteries come with instructions to charge them for up to 8 hours before use. The move to decouple from electrical cords and outlets, starting in the 60′s, has mushroomed. Beginning with improvements in standard primary (single use) cells, batteries have gotten smaller, lighter, and much more powerful. Batteries during this time frame have also taken a quantum leap forward in reliability. Reliability in this context meaning not just the ability to insert, drain and replace a battery but removing a spent set of cells and having the device in the same condition as when inserted. You’ve seen it that rusty, brown, toxic smelling liquid that corrodes anything it touches. This aspect was extremely costly as measured by replacement cost not only of the batteries but the entire device if not discovered in time. Primary cells, when fully discharged had to be replaced in toto and consigned to your local landfill. The spent cells deteriorated over time and leached into the groundwater. Government regulators addressed this and these toxic materials were soon banned from landfills. Mandatory recycling programs were implemented to take it’s place. Primary cells when manufactured and discharged create an inordinate amount of waste and use a similar amount of resources. One cubic yard of single use batteries may hypothetically power one hundred radios for one hundred hours. The cells are heavy and bulky and, even subsequent to their manufacture, create a lot of pollution through transportation and handling, all the while using an ever dwindling supply of fossil fuel. Rechargeable (secondary) batteries have taken a huge step forward in ameliorating many of the previously mentioned problems. Rechargeable batteries last an average of 500 cycles (charge and discharge). Yes replacing primary batteries with rechargeable cells uses approximately 0.5% of the raw materials,0.5% of the logistical requirements witha corresponding reduction in waste and requires 0.5% of the resources needed to recycle the cells. Yes even recycling has an environmental impact albeit a tiny fraction of the “Throw and Go” mentality. Further refinements in the battery chemistries commonly used today vastly increased the run time while simultaneously reducing the weight. Batteries acount for about half the weight of today’s cordless power tools so a 30% reduction in battery’s weight equates to a 15% overall reduction ithe the entire tool. This reduction may not be readily apparent to anyone who has not used a cordless tool in an overhead environment but that 15% can make a huge difference in productivity all the while reducing chances of workplace injury resulting from fatigue. Improvements in overall power output per pound of generating cell have been accompanied by an marked increase in the use of prepackaged cells. That is, Sub C battery cells pre-configured and welded together in a shape inherent to individual manufacturers design. Prepacks do not lend themselves to easy cell replacement as they are assembled using tamper proof screws (primarily #10 Torx) and the cells are connected using an industry specific side by side spot welder not readily available to anyone but manufacturers or dedicated rebuilders of prepacks. When rechargeable batteries were in thei infancy most cells were and many still are similar in size, shape nomenclature to today’s AA, C and D cells, only rechargeable and in a stand alone charger. Today’s prepack cells are primarily LIon 18650′s or NiCd sub C. Neither of these cells are bought and sold at your local Radio Shack. Today’s prepacks have therefore taken a step backwards in recyclibility. They have gone from easily recycled individual cells to unitary packs comprised of many disparate materials (including PC boards for LIon) all having different recommended methods of recycling. This problem however has recently been addressed. There is presently available a universal prepack battery rebuild kit containing all new upgraded internals while reusing all the connections, shell etc. Starting with a tamper proof torx wrench and ending with new sub c cells and the final piece of insulating fish paper before the top half is refstened all wornout parts are replaced with new.
